Minor surgery

Apr 24, 2017 - 8:29 PM - by Marsha Lynn
Marsha Lynn's Avatar I have had procedures requiring general anesthesia multiple times in my life. The most major experience was having a cancerous kidney removed. That one was a pretty big deal. But none have been pleasant.

I do not do well with anesthesia. For one thing, I get sick to my stomach afterward. Also, I have conversations after waking up and later have no memory they ever occurred. I end up being moved into a room because all the outpatient surgery people go home and I'm still not ready to... [Read More]

Entering the "retirement years"

Apr 24, 2017 - 7:59 PM - by Marsha Lynn
Marsha Lynn's Avatar It has been almost a year since I quit earning a paycheck. The library was gracious enough to celebrate it as a retirement, but there's no pension and I'm not old enough for Social Security, so calling it retirement is a bit of a stretch. This is a fantastic new organization with which our church has recently become involved. Their mission is for the State/government to bring the needs of the community to the local churches. In a nutshell, this is how it works:

A child welfare worker sees a need in the community that cannot easily be met by our social safety network. This may be something as simple... [Read More]

Goals for the Elder Years

Apr 24, 2017 - 10:48 AM - by Dave McClung
Dave McClung's Avatar I have always been a goal oriented person. Throughout my life I set goals and worked toward achieving them.

Now that I have retired, I am finding it difficult to set defined goals. Mostly, because I am not convinced that they are necessary.

My "life planner" suggest that the goal of most retired people is "To stay out of a retirement home and not be a burden on loved ones." I guess those are pretty good goals.

What do you... [Read More]

Our next "Big" Adventure

Apr 24, 2017 - 10:42 AM - by Dave McClung
Dave McClung's Avatar For years I have been tempted to hike the Appalachian Trail. I have hiked several parts of it as "section hikes" but have not hiked it from end to end. The five month commitment is too much for me.

Recently, I have learned that England has a similar trail. It is know as the Coast2Coast Trail. Linda and I have decided to go hike the Coast2Coast Trail. For our first time, we won't do the entire trail, but we will explore the major sections.

Unlike... [Read More]
